Druskininkai is one of Lithuania’s most beloved spa towns — a place where pine forest, river bends, and the scent of mineral springs have drawn visitors for well over a century. About Druskininkai

Druskininkai is a picturesque resort town in southern Lithuania, approximately 130 kilometres southwest of Vilnius, that has been captivating visitors for centuries. The town’s strategic position along the Nemunas River has played a crucial role in its development and popularity. Its name comes from the Lithuanian word druska — salt — a reference to the mineral-rich springs that made this place famous.

Forests cover large areas around the town, offering marked cycling paths and walking trails supported by municipal tourism infrastructure. The Nemunas River, which shapes the landscape on the town’s western and southern edge, is Lithuania’s longest river and one of the defining features of the entire region.

Hiking the Trail

The trail forms a loop and can be walked in either direction. The path is paved throughout most of its length, making it easy to follow at any pace and in any season.

A walk along the banks of the Nemunas takes in evergreen pine forests and offers panoramic views over the romantic Love Island, where one hundred years ago youngsters used to gather to have fun. Today the island is a nature reserve. The whole route is well signposted and there are plenty of resting places.

Highlights

The Nemunas Riverbank: The main section of the trail follows the river through quiet pine forest. The Nemunas River shapes the landscape, with marked cycling and walking paths supported by municipal tourism infrastructure. The river is wide and slow here, with forested banks on both sides. The sound of water, the smell of pine, and the absence of traffic make this stretch genuinely calming — exactly the atmosphere Druskininkai has been offering its visitors for over a century.

Love Island Panorama (Meilės Sala): One of the most memorable viewpoints on the route is the panorama of Love Island — a small river island visible from the elevated section of the path. The trail leads through the pine forests of the Nemunas River to a small rise, from which one of the most beautiful views of the city — the panorama of Love Island — opens up. The island itself is now a nature reserve.

The Cable Car View: If you want to see the whole route from above, consider taking the cable car — the only one of its kind in Lithuania, operating year-round. Four cabins accommodate up to ten people each and carry passengers from the Aquapark area to the other side of the Nemunas, at a height of 45 metres, over 7.5 minutes. During the journey you can admire the forests, the river bends, and a panorama of the town. The cable car is not part of the walking route itself, but it is located right along it and makes for an excellent optional addition.

Vijūnėlė Park and Lake Druskonis: At the end of the route, the path passes through Vijūnėlė Park, a great place for relaxation that surrounds the Druskonis and Vijūnėlė Lakes. Reconstructed in 2011, the park’s beauty attracts both locals and guests. In spring, the park becomes a sea of blossoming narcissuses, and next to the pedestrian trail 20 cherry trees bloom. The park has beaches, water bicycle rental, children’s playgrounds, and seasonal cafés — making it an easy place to extend a stop.

The Route Sections

Along the Nemunas Riverbank: The path follows the river through pine forest, gradually becoming quieter as it moves away from the town centre. This is the most scenic and peaceful section of the route — wide river views, shaded forest paths, and the occasional bench overlooking the water. The Love Island panorama viewpoint is located along this stretch.

Vijūnėlė Park and Lakeside: The trail ends near the town centre and passes along the shores of Lake Druskonis and through Vijūnėlė Park. This section is the most park-like — well-maintained paths, benches, lake views, and in spring, the extraordinary daffodil blooms. This is where most families and casual walkers tend to linger.

Return Through Town: The loop brings walkers back through the town promenade and past the Ratnyčėlė sculpture and Health Resort Park before returning to the starting point. This section passes more of Druskininkai’s cafés, restaurants, and spa facilities — a natural place to stop for coffee or a meal at the end of the walk.

When to Visit

  • Year-round: This is genuinely one of those trails that works in every season, and Druskininkai itself is a year-round resort town with open facilities throughout the year.
  • Spring: The standout season for Vijūnėlė Park, when over 100,000 narcissuses bloom along the lakeside path and the cherry trees flower. One of the most beautiful times to walk the route.
  • Summer: Long days, warm pine-scented air, and the possibility of stopping for a swim at the lake beach. The busiest season — the riverside cafés and boat rentals are all open.
  • Autumn: The pine forest stays green year-round, but the deciduous trees along the river add colour. Quieter than summer, with crisp air and good light for photography.
  • Winter: Cross-country skis are available for rent locally, and the snow-covered riverbank takes on a completely different atmosphere. The Aquapark and Snow Arena are popular winter alternatives if the weather turns.
  • Conditions: The paved surface means this trail is accessible in most weather. Take care in icy conditions in winter, as the riverside path can be slippery.

What to Bring

  • Water: There are cafés and mineral water pump rooms along the route in town, so carrying a large supply is not necessary. However, for the quieter riverside sections, a bottle is useful.
  • Snacks or a picnic: The riverbank has plenty of benches and resting spots — a good reason to bring something to eat and stop along the way.
  • Comfortable shoes: The route is entirely paved or on well-maintained paths, so dedicated hiking boots are not needed. Trainers or comfortable walking shoes are perfectly suitable.
  • Bike or scooter (optional): Rental is available in town if you want to cover the 9.5 km more quickly or combine the route with a longer excursion into the surrounding area.
  • Insect repellent: In summer, the riverside pine forest sections can have mosquitoes, particularly in the evening.
  • Camera: The Love Island panorama, the river bends, and the spring narcissus bloom in Vijūnėlė Park are all worth photographing.

Is the Red Cliffs Worth It?

Absolutely.

The Nemunas riverside walk is the kind of route that perfectly reflects what Druskininkai is about — slow movement, clean air, pine forest, and the gentle rhythm of a river that has shaped this landscape for thousands of years. It does not demand anything of you physically, but it gives back a great deal in terms of atmosphere and calm.

For visitors staying in Druskininkai for a spa break, this walk is the ideal complement to a day of treatments — long enough to feel like proper exercise, gentle enough to feel like recovery. For those passing through on a longer Lithuanian road trip, it is one of the most pleasant ways to spend a few hours in the town.

If you want to extend the experience, the route can be combined with a cable car crossing, a visit to the M.K. Čiurlionis Memorial Museum, or a longer cycling route into the surrounding Dzūkija National Park.
